An investigation into the use of Class A fire- fighting foams to control the spread of whirling disease by wildland fire-fighting activities

چکیده
Whirling disease is a serious problem that impacts wild and hatchery salmonid stocks across the globe. Whirling disease is caused by a microscopic parasite, Myxobolus cerebralis, with a complex life history involving both salmonid and oligochaete worm hosts. In this study, we investigated the capability of wildland firefighting foams to inactivate M. cerebralis by indirect methods. Specifically, we tested the effectiveness of firefighting foams as disinfecting agents against surrogate organisms (E. coli and coliphage) in bench-scale laboratory experiments. The USFS firefighting foams tested in this study did not inactivate E. coli or coliphage during a 60-min contact time at a 10% mix ratio. We did not examine whether firefighting foams were effective at displacing bacterial and viral organisms when treated as a surfactant. Nevertheless, we conclude that continued research into the use of dilute fire retardant foams to inactivate aquatic invasive microorganisms is not warranted.

Background and objective: According to the necessities in the part 3 of National Building Regulations, design and construction of buildings should be in a way that the structures, according to the type of use, the size and the number of floors, resist long enough to fire, and prevent from destruction of buildings or from spread of fire to adjacent spaces or buildings. For this purpose, it is ne...
متن کاملBiocatalytic nerve agent detoxification in fire fighting foams.
Current events across the globe necessitate rapid technological advances to combat the epidemic of nerve agent chemical weapons. Biocatalysis has emerged as a viable tool in the detoxification of organophosphorus neurotoxins, such as the chemical weapons VX and sarin. Efficient detoxification of contaminated equipment, machinery, and soils are of principal concern. This study describes the inco...

Fire eruption (also known as ‘blow-up’ or ‘flare-up’) is a very dangerous aspect of wildland fire behaviour. It poses a significant threat to the safety of wildland fire-fighters and complicates the broader problem of wildfire risk management in complex terrain. Despite the seriousness of eruptive fire events, operational wildland fire spread models generally do not account for the possibility ...
